The Toshiba Satellite C655-S5118 15.6 inch laptop retails for $500, making it a good choice for anyone looking for a cheap laptop. However, like many cheap laptops, it’s got some good points and some bad points, especially when you’re looking for a gaming machine. While it does have some good software and a full sized keyboard, it is a bit lacking in some areas.
The S5118 uses a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i3-370M processor, which is pretty good for a laptop. It comes with 3 GB of DDR3 RAM standard, but you can upgrade that to 8 GB if you don’t mind spending a bit more money. You’ll probably want to upgrade if you plan on doing a lot of gaming. The hard drive is a 320 GB, 5400 RPM drive, which will hold a good amount of games but isn’t as large as some laptops. The 8x DVD drive is nice. There’s no webcam, but that’s not an issue for many gamers.
As far as ports go, the S5118 is a little disappointing. It only has 2 USB ports, but you can purchase a USB port for very little if you need more. It has a headphone and mic jack, a VGA video out, a card reader, and Ethernet port. There’s no HDMI out on this laptop, which may be an issue for some people.
Now let’s take a look at the graphics card. Like most of the other specs on the laptop, it’s nothing that will blow you away, but it is capable of running some games. The 15.6 inch LCD display has a resolution of 1366 x 768 and is done in a 16:9 ratio. It can display video up to 720p, so you’re not going to be amazing by any HD graphics. The Intel HD Grpahics card dynamically allocates its shared graphics memory and ranges from 64 MB to 1275 MB. Again, not the greatest, but it can handle many games.
As far as battery life goes, the S5118 falls into the average category. You’ll get a few hours of gaming time out of it, but don’t expect a lot. Be sure to carry your power cable with you if you plan on doing any major gaming sessions. For the price, it’s not a bad laptop, but you’ll want to spend a bit to upgrade it if you want a real gaming machine.
